5 kWh vs 10 kWh batteries: choosing backup capacity

Energy determines backup duration
A 5 kWh battery can theoretically supply a 1 kW load for five hours; 10 kWh for ten hours. Actual runtime is shorter because usable capacity, conversion losses and reserve settings vary.
Power is a separate limit
A battery may have sufficient energy but insufficient discharge power for a pump or several large appliances. Check the battery power limit and the inverter surge capability.
Plan for overnight loads
List lighting, refrigeration, security, internet and other essential appliances with operating hours. Size storage against daily energy and choose an appropriate charging array.
